Headshot or Personal Branding Session?

How to figure out which one you actually need.

This question comes up a lot, usually when someone is trying to figure out what to book without spending more than they need to. The answer depends on what you’re actually trying to do with the images.

What a headshot is

A headshot is one image. Maybe a handful with slightly different expressions or framing, but fundamentally one look, one setup. The purpose is straightforward: this is what I look like, this is my face, this is the version of me you’ll see in professional contexts.

It’s for LinkedIn, your email signature, a company directory, a speaking bio, a press kit. It’s the image that answers the question “who is this person” before anyone has read a word about you.

What a personal branding session is

A personal branding session is a library. Multiple looks, multiple setups, multiple contexts. You at your desk. You in conversation. You at a whiteboard. A detail shot of something specific to what you do. Three different outfits that show different sides of how you work.

The point is to give your website, your social media, your speaking page, and your marketing materials a bank of images to pull from. Images that show not just what you look like but what you do, how you work, and why someone would want to hire you.

How to decide

Book a headshot if:

  • You mainly need a professional image for LinkedIn or directories
  • You have one clear, specific use case
  • You’re earlier in your career or brand-building
  • Budget is a genuine constraint right now

Book a branding session if:

  • Your website is going live and needs more than one image
  • You’re actively building an audience or client base
  • You speak, write, or put yourself in front of people regularly
  • You’ve been making do with the same few images for too long

What most people do

Most people start with a headshot, then come back for a branding session once they’ve built enough of a presence that they actually need the content. That’s a completely reasonable path.

The main reason people skip straight to branding: they’ve been in business long enough to know that one image isn’t going to cover everything they need, and they’d rather solve it all at once.

Either way, the session starts with a conversation about what you’re building and what you need the photos to actually do. That conversation usually makes the answer obvious pretty quickly.
