The Cigar Box NC

Commercial Photography | Southern Pines & Hope Mills, NC

Commercial Photography

The Cigar Box is a multi-location cigar lounge and bar in North Carolina, with locations in Southern Pines and Hope Mills. They sell premium cigars, rare whiskeys, and cocktails in spaces built around the idea that the experience around the cigar is just as important as the cigar itself. Dark wood, humidors you can walk into, regulars who treat the place like a second living room.

The owner and the location manager were interested in hiring me but had questions about price. Commercial photography is an investment, and for a business with multiple locations to cover, they wanted to be sure the cost was worth it. We talked through what the session would produce and they agreed to move forward.

What I didn't know until I arrived was that the owner had already hired another photographer before me. A real estate photographer, brought in at a lower rate to try to capture the space. They shot the location, delivered the files, and the business paid for them. Not a single image was usable.

The manager told me this before we started. She wasn't complaining, just explaining what they'd been through. The real estate photographer was perfectly capable of shooting an empty room in daylight. But a cigar lounge isn't an empty room in daylight. It has low ceilings, intentional dimness, dark wood that absorbs light, and a humidor that needs to look like exactly what it is: a room worth stepping into. Standard architectural photography approaches don't translate. The images came out flat, dark in the wrong places, and didn't show the space the way it actually feels.

Two Problems a Different Kind of Photographer Solves

The first problem is the light. Spaces like this require a technique called light painting, where you work through a long exposure and selectively illuminate different areas of the frame during the shot itself. You're essentially building the image one section at a time before the shutter closes. Done right, the result is a room that looks exactly as inviting on screen as it does in person. The humidor especially benefited from this approach. The cedar walls, the rows of cigars, the glass cases. All of it came through the way it needed to.

The second problem is the people. The Cigar Box isn't an empty showroom. Part of what makes it work as a business is the atmosphere, and atmosphere doesn't photograph well when a room is staged and static. The regulars were there during the session, which was exactly right. The challenge is that real people in a real space don't automatically arrange themselves into usable commercial images. You have to direct them.

That part comes from my background in film and video production. When a scene needs specific action from specific people in specific positions, you call it. You tell one person to lean in, another to laugh, another to look toward the bar. You set up the frame, give the direction, call action, and capture it. The regulars at The Cigar Box were good sports about it, and the result was a set of images that showed what the place actually feels like on a busy night, not what it looks like when everyone stops and stares at the camera.

What the Session Produced

We covered multiple locations over the course of the project, building a complete image library for each: the bar areas, the lounge seating, the humidors, lifestyle images with real patrons, and environmental shots that gave the brand something to work with across their website, social media, and print. Those images are what you see on their site today.

The owner's reaction after seeing the work was the kind of thing that makes the conversation about price irrelevant after the fact. The first photographer cost less and produced nothing. The second session produced everything they needed. The math on which one was the better investment is pretty straightforward.
